  • 1 large loaf sourdough or French bread
  • 8 eggs
  • 2 ¼ cups milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • Dash salt
  • Cooking spray or butter for greasing pan
  • Crumble topping:
  • 1/8 cup (1/4 stick) butter, chopped into chunks
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • Serve with powdered sugar, syrup, pecans, fresh fruit, and/or cream cheese glaze
  • *optional*
  • Cream cheese cinnamon glaze:
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tbsp cinnamon
  • ½ cup powdered sugar + more if you wish to thicken

Tear bread into chunks and set them aside. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Dump in bread and toss until the bread is all moistened. Grease a 9x13 pan with either butter or cooking spray and pour in bread. Tightly cover and let set for at least an hour, but it can be let to set overnight in the fridge.

In another bowl, mix together the brown sugar and flour, then add in the butter and mix with a mixer or a fork until it is crumbly like tiny little pebbles. This can be done either just before baking or at the same time as you assemble the toast, and put it into a sandwich bag and leave in the fridge until time to bake.

When you are ready to cook it, preheat your oven to 350 then top your French toast with our crumble topping and bake for 45 minutes, or an hour if you want it to be firmer.
To finish your French toast, dust with powdered sugar, serve with syrup, and/or mix together all your cream cheese glaze ingredients in a large bowl with a mixer and set aside until your bread comes out of the oven.
